My grandparents leave today to go back to China and everyone is taking them to the airport to see them off, except me. I'm going to be at New Trier's Winter Festival, performing.
They've been here for 6 months, and there have been a lot of changes, for them and for us. They aren't used to the climate here, outside and at home. My family is a lot more casual than a typical Chinese family, we are more relaxed, and we speak Chinglish. They've had a lot to get used to.
We did, too. With them here, there's always someone to cook, and there's been a lot more food. Of course, there are more mouths to feed. The house is a lot cleaner, because my grandma is used to having a clean house and can't help picking up after us. She scrubs the kitchen and bathroom floors almost daily. She does our laundry much more frequently than we're used to, and starts washing the dishes even before everyone's finished dinner. Grandpa is on the computer whenever we're not, working on his book. Mom and Dad get time to rest at home and us kids end up with very few chores.
I wonder, now that we've gotten used to 6 months of good Chinese cooking and a clean house, if we'll be able to maintain this level of lifestyle. Will we go back to what it was like before they came? Will we be satisfied with it?
Either way, we'll miss them. That's for sure.
