Code in Everyday Life

12-3-10 8:28AM Once you are close enough to someone, you know enough to come up with your own nicknames and codewords. Usually they aren't official - they merely refer to experiences you share.

Sometimes the words become public, like "Salsa". Everyone calls him that.
Sometimes only a few people know the true meanings of the word(s), like the "Greenhouse", "Griffin", and "the teddy bear".
Sometimes the words are unobtrusive, like "How are you feeling?"
Sometimes you don't know exactly how many people understand the meaning of "like stuffed animals," which, by the way, is a valid answer to "How are you feeling?" So are "Good" and "6."
Sometimes it is accompanied by a wink and a nudge, often times not.
Sometimes it's as innocent as "tying your shoe."
Sometimes you know there's one that you Just Can't Understand, like Pear's "Shklar."
Sometimes it's an action.
Sometimes it's just a look.

When you know someone well enough, a look can convey very complicated ideas. There are times when it seems to the outsider that we (Paige and I) are telling each other to shut up for no reason. They cannot hear the conversation going on in the raised eyebrows, the tilt of our heads, and our smiles. They cannot understand our language.
