What does it mean to be in love?
Does it mean slow dancing with all the world's eyes looking on, but the room is just the two of you?
Does it mean foxtrot songs play as you walk down the street, hand in hand, laughing at the people who pass?
Does it mean celebrating little successes over a bottle of wine at a favorite restaurant?
Does it mean taking her best friend shopping when the best friend is going through a hard time and she's out of town, in her place?
Does it mean making scrapbooks together at the kitchen table, and flipping through them, sharing the smiles, years later?
Does it mean holding each other as you cry, kissing the tears away, not saying anything, because words won't make it better?
Does it mean whispering quietly until you fall asleep,
driving in comfortable silence,
keeping an eye out for little things you know she'll like, so you can tell her about them later,
knowing someone supports you
believes in you
will encourage you
comfort you
remind you that you're a good person
you're worth it
every
single
day.
Love.
It's for you,
between you,
exclusively yours,
something you create together.
It's not so the world can see
just
so caught up in it
it doesn't matter what people think.
It can't be forced
controlled
stolen
broken.
It just grows
organically
a glow that emanates from within
that is shared with everyone around you
while you lose nothing.
Look around.
Is it that unspoken connection between your parents that holds your family together
even though you've only seen them share one kiss
not in jest?
Is it the fifteen minute shouting match about whether to keep peanut butter in the refrigerator
and hours laughing about it afterward?
Is it the confidence of a woman who knows she is loved, and doesn't dress to impress anyone but herself, because only his opinions matter?
Is it the old couple walking side by side in the park, early in the morning, without speaking?
How can I find what you have?
And how can I recognize it when I do?
Just remember,
Love sets you free.
