This morning I got a message: "Mengsha...we need to talk."
We need to talk. Why does that sound so ominous? Is it the word "talk"?
I think it is. Yesterday I asked my mom if I could talk to her. Apprehension! Why? We are all afraid of our parents giving us "The Talk." How awkward that would be! (Especially from Asian parents.) When we hear "Can I talk to you" or "We need to talk" we automatically think that there's something wrong. It's been ingrained.
It's that word, "talk." Since by asking for a talk, you are talking, there has to be something serious to discuss. And serious things are rarely good things. Good things, happy things, and be casually bestowed and do not require use of the word "talk". That's why there's such apprehension. We think that it can't be good news. At this age, especially, minds think "Am I in trouble?" Is there are better way to say it? Because "I need to say something to you" and "We need to dicuss something" cause similar discomfort, and even "I need to tell you something." Is there a comfortable way to break the news?
Why so serious?
