| 11-17-10 9:23PM In MV we asked Teddy if he was planning to major in music. Well, of course he was. We asked him why he was taking MV. He laughed and said he didn't know, probably just because he can. Reinstine overheard our conversation, of course, and said that half the class probably wouldn't use MV after the class anyway. So what's the point? The point is enjoyment - taking math class with people who have been in your math classes for the past 6 years. It's challenge - the challenge of going the next step, of applying yourself. It's competition - you're finally with people of your level, who think as quickly as you do, who do as well or better than you. It's staying away from boredom - I can't imagine taking Stats, I would die. I would definitely get worse grades, because I wouldn't try as hard. It's for personal pride and bragging rights - this is the 6th and last year of New Trier Math, out of all the kids in our grade, how many people can say that? Twenty-two exactly. Why quit when you're so close to finishing? A six-year marathon and you're giving up in the last year? I learn it for the learning, because unless I become an engineer, which I'm not planning on doing, I won't be needing it in the near or even distant future. You can bet when I'm in college, I'll be taking more math that I won't be needing and all kinds of "pointless" courses. They're just... Fun. |

What's the point?
